When was the first time we heard the word “Android” ? 2010 / 2009 / 2008 or may be an year or two earlier ?
Android is a mobile device operating system based on Linux kernel. Android Inc., is a California based firm which is the initial developer of the software and Google has acquired the firm in 2005.
Who is responsible for the development now ?
Android is the flagship software of and developed by the Open Handset Alliance (formed in 2007) led by Google. Open Handset Alliance consists of 84 firms which includes Google, Sony, Dell, Qualcomm, Intel, HTC,LG Electronics, Texas Instruments, Motorola, Samsung Electronics, T-Mobile, Nvidia, and Wind River Systems.
So, starting from 2008 when the first version of Android is released till today, Android has gone through a lot of changes and milestones.
What is the share now ?
In 2nd quarter of 2009, Android had a 2.8% share of worldwide smartphone shipments. By the 3rd quarter of 2011 there are estimates that more than half (52.5%) of the smartphone market belongs to Android. That shows the potential of Android with more updates coming both in terms of software and the devices running it.
